West Fertilizer Storage Facility Explosion Exposes Alarming Trend in U.S. Chemical Safety and Security

As a result of on-site preliminary assessment performed by global security expert Anyck Turgeon, M-CAT Enterprises (M-CAT) is releasing three informational resources to help raise the understanding and awareness of chemical safety issues: i) a Firestorm interview revealing initial alarming on-site findings ii) a comprehensive article exposing the economics of poor chemical security practices and providing ten easily implemented recommendations iii) link to a live interview on May 29, 2013 to address other security challenges and best practices towards fire avoidance in manufacturing and/or storage facilities containing toxic and explosive chemicals such as fertilizers.

The devastating explosion at a West Texas fertilizer storage facility killing 15 people, injuring more than 200 and leveling surrounding homes and businesses in a four-block radius exposes a chilling trend in the way chemical safety is managed in the United States. According to the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), chemical incidents have increased by an alarming 400 percent in the United States since 2010. “This is alarming,” says chemical security, safety and fraud expert Turgeon. “And to complicate matters, a disturbing percentage of plant managers and other respondents – nearly 25 percent – are not likely to report an incident out of fear of retaliation. This is happening globally and gets worst in other countries”.

While eyes are on Texas over this large-scale tragedy, governments and energy corporate leaders worldwide must proactively reassess their current production, transportation and safety postures, adopt more collaborative and comprehensive security compliance programs as well as provide training and tools required for staff to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

As one in three plants currently face similar safety issues, you can:

•  Review the interview completed with MCAT’s CEO Anyck Turgeon after she delivered on-site volunteer assistance at http://www.firestorm.com/Blog/west-fertilizer-plant-explosion-raises-chemical-safety-issues.html

•  Read a more comprehensive article exposing the economics of the fertilizer industry and learn ten ways to avoid chemical plant explosions by visiting : Top 10 Ways to Prevent Chemical Plant and Storage Facilities Explosions

•  Join a live webinar on May 29, 2013 hosted by Firestorm CEO Jim Satterfield, at which time Anyck Turgeon will answer questions about the current status of chemical safety in America . Register: http://www.firestorm.com/event/65-webinar-top-10-ways-to-prevent-chemical-plant-and-storage-facilities-explosions-with-anyck-turgeon

It is now time to pay attention and start adopting solutions for such preventable recurrences and silent killers, through contamination of entire communities causing long-term respiratory disease occurrences.

Africa Intelligence Reports

Max Security, a global security consulting firm is now providing Africa Intelligence Reports. The company recently expanded its intelligence gathering operations to Sub-Saharan and southern Africa. “Africa is booming”, explains Africa Intelligence Manager Jay Radzinski, “but emerging business hubs like Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria continue to be marred by terrorism, civil unrest, and other hindrances to business continuity.”

The launch of the Africa regional intelligence package marks the first official expansion of Max Security’s growing intelligence division, after recording initial successes in the Middle East and North Africa regions. Max’s regional intelligence packages provide clients with a turnkey solution for their security information needs, keeping them informed of broad trends affecting business continuity in the long term, while alerting them to immediate threats to their specific interests.

“We provide our clients with deep familiarity of otherwise complex and volatile operating environments.” Says Intelligence Director Dor Raveh. “Clients receive everything from in-depth reports on changing political trends, to tactical alerts warning that the route to the airport has been closed.”

Max’s proven intelligence gathering capabilities stem from its’ analysts’ unrivaled ability to triangulate between a variety of sources, including social media, local media, and ground contacts. The department is comprised of a motivated, energetic mixture of experienced veterans from the Israeli intelligence and Special Ops services and a multi-national array of academics well versed in geopolitics.

“The ability of our fledgling division to meet the challenges posed by the Arab Spring created a whirlwind in the security community,” Says Raveh, “Now, we’re out to give our clients the same solutions to enable smooth business operations in Africa.” Over the past two years, Max’s intelligence branch had become well known in the corporate security community for its ability to separate the essential issues from the non-essential, providing timely, concise updates while never hesitating to give a bottom-line assessment. These aspects, argue intel branch members, are what have caused their clients’ exodus from existing intelligence juggernauts to their young division. “We’ve become the security company that other security professionals come to for help”, explains Raveh.

In addition to intelligence services, Max’s Travel Security department has recently opened its newest regional hub in Lagos Nigeria. From Lagos, Max provides clients with a range of risk-mitigation and travel security solutions ranging from close protection to facility security consulting. “Establishing an operating hub in Lagos complimented our global reach with a local touch,” explains CEO Noam Schiller.

Additional African countries that Max provides Intel for include Ethiopia, Angola, Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Cameroon and Senegal. To demonstrate the Max advantage, Max Security Intelligence is offering a free trial subscription for their Africa regional package. Subscribers receive daily summaries, bi-weekly strategic reports, special reports, and alerts, provided using proven intelligence gathering techniques adapted to the African continent. Subscribers are also offered tactical monitoring subscriptions to strategic cities across the continent, including Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg.

Foreign Translations, Inc. Completes Dari Translation of Safety Manual for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

In December, after eight weeks of effectively managing teams working in three different countries around the world, Foreign Translations, Inc. (www.foreigntranslations.com), successfully completed the Dari translation of a safety manual for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on behalf of the Afghanistan Engineering District (AED). The project was awarded to Foreign Translations, Inc, through its General Services Administration “GSA” schedule with the federal government

The AED, a division of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Middle East District, works to provide stability and security in Afghanistan through reconstruction and infrastructure development. As part of its efforts to stabilize Afghanistan, the AED employs thousands of Afghans and has created initiatives to ensure the majority of its contracts are awarded to Afghan nationals and firms. Focusing its efforts on increasing security and positively impacting the economy, the AED has completed a variety of different projects from facilities for Afghan soldiers and police, to water management studies and road construction.

The Dari translation of the safety manual presented Foreign Translations, Inc. with unique challenges and opportunities. With the AED contact and the Dari translators all located in Afghanistan, Foreign Translations, Inc. worked odd hours and often conducted early morning conference calls in order to accommodate the time zone differences. To provide an accurate technical translation, Foreign Translations, Inc. ensured that Dari was the native language of the translators assigned to the project, and that their areas of expertise coincided with those specified by the AED. Despite the logistical challenges presented by managing teams in different countries and time zones around the world, Foreign Translations, Inc., through its well-established quality process in place, completed and delivered the safety manual translation in less time than the three months originally estimated for the project’s completion. Foreign Translations, Inc. was honored to participate in a project to assure the safety of those working to establish a safer, more secure Afghanistan.

About Foreign Translations, Inc.
Foreign Translations, Inc. (www.foreigntranslations.com) is a 12- year old global translation services firm specializing in foreign language translation, interpreting and website translation headquartered in Greenville, SC.

Rackspace Wins Joint Server Farm Tender To Support Ministry of Defence (MoD) Websites

Rackspace Hosting, the world’s leader in hosting, has announced it has won a three year, competitive deal to provide fully managed support to the Joint Server Farm (JSF), a secure hosting environment for Ministry of Defence (MoD) websites. The partnership will see MoD, Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force websites consolidated onto a single, virtualised infrastructure to enable easier management, greater efficiencies and scalability.

Rackspace beat 18 other companies to win the contract to support the JSF following a European Journal Competition and tender for contract. Through the deal Rackspace will provide MoD partners with the flexibility to manage and change websites quickly to meet user demand. It will also provide enhanced security from firewalls and intrusion detection devices, which constantly monitor for threats, round-the-clock access to certified engineers and a 100% network uptime guarantee, backed by its service level agreement.

Rackspace’s EMEA managing director Brian Thomson said: “We are delighted to have extended our relationship with the MoD by winning this tender in what was a hard fought pitch by lots of companies. At a time when costs and efficiencies are being brought to the forefront, we know we can truly help simplify the MoD infrastructure to meet these challenges.”

The JSF is a single infrastructure for all services, websites and applications. It currently supports a number of well-known MoD campaigns, such as the recruiting website for the Army, Start Thinking Soldier as well as the Army Pathfinder programme. It also supports Navy and Air Force recruitment campaigns, all of the cadets’ sites, a number of admin sites and facilitates small short-term public information campaign sites.

The MoD created the JSF because it had lots of disparate sites on different infrastructures, which were hard to maintain, inefficient and unscalable. With the growing influence of the internet it was also decided that a central hosting UK resource that departments could tap into for their web requirements was needed. In addition to this, the MoD was bound to meet the Transformational Government Agenda (TGA), which requires rationalisation of websites across all government departments. The MoD also moved to virtual servers for its consolidated infrastructure to provide greater flexibility when managing the sites.

Around 70% of MoD websites are currently hosted on Rackspace infrastructure and this deal extends the company’s partnership with ArmyNET, the award-winning portal which allows soldiers to keep in touch with their families.

Rackspace consolidated 67 servers to 12 physical hypervisors and 72 virtual servers by implementing virtualisation across the MoD infrastructure. This solution when combined with a raft of changes to the contract cost model, including a reduction in SAN spindle storage costs, resulted in a reduction of overall costs. It also provides greater efficiencies for power and space, with a lower number of overall servers.
